Google AI Overviews: How Business Citations Work
Google says there is nothing special to add for AI Overviews, so a business earns citations by being indexed, snippet-eligible and genuinely useful, and it measures them in Search Console.

How AI Overviews choose links
Google's documentation for site owners is clear that AI Overviews and AI Mode use the same foundations as the rest of Search. There are no additional requirements to appear, no special optimisations, no AI text files and no special schema.org markup. To be eligible as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet.
The mechanism does differ from a classic result page. Both AI Overviews and AI Mode may use "query fan-out": issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources while the response is generated, and identifying more supporting pages as they go. Google says this displays a wider and more diverse set of links than a classic search. AI Overviews are only shown when Google's systems judge them additive, and Google notes they "often don't trigger". AI Mode and AI Overviews may use different models, so the links shown will vary between them.
One page can therefore appear for a question it never targeted, because the fan-out found a subtopic you answer well.
What to measure
Search Console is the source. Google says sites appearing in AI features are included in the overall search traffic and reported in the Performance report within the Web search type. The counting rules in the Search Console help are specific:
- A click on a link in an AI Overview counts as a click.
- Standard impression rules apply.
- An AI Overview occupies a single position, and every link inside it is assigned that same position.
- In AI Mode a follow-up question is a new query, and its impressions, clicks and position are counted against that new query.
- Data from Search Labs experiments is not included.
In June 2026 Google announced separate Search Generative AI performance reports in Search Console, and its blog states they were rolled out to all websites worldwide by 31 August 2026. Those reports show impressions within generative AI features on Search and Discover, the pages that appeared, countries, devices and dates at hourly to monthly granularity. Look for that view in your property and compare it with the overall Performance report.
How to read the numbers
Impressions rising while clicks stay flat usually means the site is appearing as one of several links inside an overview. Because all links in an overview share one position, average position can improve without a corresponding change in clicks; do not read that as a ranking win.
Look at queries rather than totals. Question-shaped and longer queries are where AI features appear most. Split branded from unbranded queries so that people searching for your company name do not mask the picture.
Look at pages. The generative AI report shows which URLs appeared; those are the pages worth improving first, because they already pass the eligibility bar.
Google states that clicks from result pages with AI Overviews are higher quality, meaning people spend more time on the site. Treat that as Google's claim, and check it with your own data: enquiries, sign-ups, quote requests and sales from organic search, rather than raw clicks.

What earns a citation for a small business
Google's own list is short. Unique, non-commodity content that answers what people actually ask. A good page experience across devices. Content that Googlebot can reach, with robots.txt and any CDN or hosting layer not blocking it, and pages that return HTTP 200. Important content in text, supported by good images and video where relevant. Structured data that matches the visible text. An up-to-date Business Profile and, for retailers, Merchant Center. Internal links so pages can be found.
For a trades firm, an accountant or a small manufacturer that means pages that answer real customer questions: what the service costs, how long it takes, which areas are covered, what happens on the first visit, and what the business does when something goes wrong. Put the business name, location and author on the page. Do not generate hundreds of near-identical pages to chase questions; that runs into Google's scaled content abuse policy and undoes the work.
Controlling what appears
Google's controls for AI features are the same preview controls as for snippets: nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex. More restrictive settings limit how content is featured. Robots.txt directives for Googlebot control crawling for Search as a whole, and Google-Extended is a separate control for training and grounding in some of Google's other systems, not for Search. If a preview control does not seem to work, Google's advice is to confirm it with the URL Inspection tool and allow time for a recrawl, which can take days to months.
