AI Visibility: Mentions and Citations

Define mention, citation, position, source and qualified outcome before comparing tools or publishing more pages.

Define mention, citation, position, source and qualified outcome before comparing tools or publishing more pages.

Five signals that get mixed up

"AI visibility" is sold as one number. It is at least five, and they behave differently.

  1. Mention. The answer names your business but gives no link. Good for recognition, invisible in every analytics tool you own.
  2. Citation. The answer links to a page on your site. This is the only signal that can turn into a visit.
  3. Position. Whether you are the first source shown or the eighth. In Google's AI Mode and in ChatGPT, most readers never open the full source list.
  4. Source. Which product produced the answer: Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Copilot or Gemini. Each has its own retrieval and its own audience.
  5. Qualified outcome. A visit that becomes an enquiry, a call or an order. Without this, the other four are vanity.

Write these five definitions on one page before you buy a tool or brief an agency. Then every report has to say which one it is counting.

Where the data actually lives

Google. Search Console's Search Generative AI performance report, announced in June 2026 and rolled out to all sites by the end of August 2026 according to Google, shows impressions, pages, countries and devices for AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover. This is the only first-party publisher data any AI answer engine currently gives you, so use it as the anchor.

ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Gemini. At the time of writing there is no Search Console equivalent for these that I am aware of. Your evidence is referral traffic in analytics, where the hostnames look like chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and gemini.google.com. Be aware that some AI visits arrive with no referrer at all and land in "direct".

Server logs. OpenAI documents three user agents that matter here. OAI-SearchBot decides whether you can appear in ChatGPT search. ChatGPT-User fetches a page when a user's question triggers it and is not an automated crawler. GPTBot is for training and has nothing to do with citations. Google's Google-Extended token controls use in Gemini and grounding, not AI Overviews. A rise in ChatGPT-User fetches of a page is weak but real evidence that it is being read.

Manual sampling. Nothing else tells you about mentions and position, so you have to look.

Build a small prompt panel

A prompt panel is a fixed list of questions you run in each AI product on a schedule. Keep it small enough to actually do.

  1. Choose 20 to 30 prompts a real customer would type, in the words they use. Mix brand-free questions ("IT support Cyber Essentials Hampshire") with comparisons and "how do I" questions.
  2. Set the conditions and keep them fixed: logged out or a clean test account, memory off, UK location, the default model. Record the model name and date each time.
  3. For each prompt and product, log four things: mentioned yes or no, cited yes or no, position if cited, and which competitors appeared.
  4. Save the full answer text, not just the score. When a result changes you will want to know what the answer said.
  5. Run it monthly, on the same week. Two people should do it alternately so one person's habits do not shape the results.

This takes a morning a month for a small firm. It is the whole measurement system many agencies charge for.

Tools: what to ask before paying

Paid tools, including SEO suites that now publish AI visibility metrics, can run larger panels than you can. Before signing up, ask: which prompts, chosen by whom; which country and language; which models and how often; whether you can see the raw answers; and how they treat a mention with no link. A score with no visible prompt list is not evidence. If the vendor cannot show a prompt where you appeared, treat the number as marketing.

Read it monthly, act quarterly

Put the five signals on one page each month: Google AI impressions from Search Console, AI referral sessions from analytics, and mention, citation and position from the panel. Next to each, list the qualified outcomes from the same period.

Act only on movements that hold for three months. A single month in AI answers is noise; models change, and a competitor's new page can displace you for a week. When a page is cited often but never converts, the fix is usually on the page (a clearer next step), not in more content. When you are mentioned but never cited, check the technical basics in AI search content that earns citations.
